Description & objectives: This course aims at leading the students from the level of segmental phonology they have learnt in previous courses to the suprasegmental phonology of English. In particular, students will study the English syllable, stress and intonation. The aims of this course are:
• Cementing the basic phonetic concepts
• Understanding the English syllables and the constraints that govern it
• Being able to place stress correctly on English syllables
• Practise pronouncing weak and strong forms correctly in connected speech
• Shedding light on intonation in English
Evaluation: First Midterm Exam 20%, Second Midterm Exam 20%, Quizzes and Participation 10% and Final Exam 50%.
